The Trojans men's basketball team faces a demanding week of KJCCC action, beginning with a road matchup at Garden City Wednesday (Jan. 14) before returning home to host nationally ranked No. 19 Butler Community College on Saturday (Jan. 17).
The Trojans enter the week at 4–12 (2–8 KJCCC). While Colby is still searching for its first road victory of the season (0–6 away), the Trojans have been competitive throughout the year and boast a solid 4–4 record at the Colby Event Center, where they will look to defend home court against one of the nation's most explosive offenses.
Offensively, Colby averages 77.3 points per game and shoots an impressive 35.2 percent from three-point range. Nearly every contest this season has come down to the final minutes, as the Trojans have consistently played opponents tough on both ends of the floor. Defensively, the Trojans have been one of the team's biggest strengths this season, routinely holding opponents below their scoring averages and forcing tough possessions late in games.
Colby features three players averaging double figures. D.J. Cason leads the way with 14.3 points per game while also pacing the team in assists at 2.8 per contest. Giannis Asimakopoulos (10.8 ppg) and Aliou Diallo (10.3 ppg) provide steady scoring and defensive pressure, with both averaging 1.2 steals per game. Gabe Njenga has emerged as a key spark for the Trojans, finding his rhythm offensively in recent games. Over the last two contests, Njenga has scored 30 points while shooting an efficient 13-of-18 from the field, giving Colby a much-needed scoring punch.
Garden City enters the matchup 10–6 (5–5 KJCCC). The Broncbusters are coming off back-to-back losses to Dodge City and Cloud County but remain one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the country. Garden City averages 99.9 points per game, ranking sixth nationally, but also allows 91.2 points per contest, setting the stage for a fast-paced, high-scoring battle. The Broncbusters feature four players averaging double figures, led by Devonte Reed, who scores 16.9 points per game.
Jordan Nevill follows closely with 15.9 points per contest and averages 3.2 made three-pointers per game. Garden City moves the ball effectively, with Nevill leading the team at 3.7 assists per game and another guard also averaging more than 3.5 assists. On the glass, the Broncbusters rely on a balanced rebounding effort, with five players averaging just over four rebounds per game.
After the road trip, Colby returns home to face No. 19 Butler Community College, which enters the week 11–5 (7–3 KJCCC). The Grizzlies are riding a two-game winning streak and are 3–3 in road contests this season. If Garden City's offense is explosive, Butler's is even more daunting. The Grizzlies average 109.1 points per game, second-most in the nation, while allowing 97.3 points per contest, making them one of the most fast-paced teams in junior college basketball.
Tristan Hankins leads Butler with 18.3 points per game and fills the stat sheet with 4.0 assists and 4.9 rebounds per contest. Xavier Brown adds 14.9 points per game, with both players averaging multiple three-pointers per outing. Defensively, Butler brings relentless pressure, with eight different players averaging at least one steal per game, creating turnovers and easy scoring opportunities in transition.
The Trojans face a challenging but opportunity-filled week, with a chance to break through on the road at Garden City Wednesday, and make a statement at home against a nationally ranked Butler squad this weekend.
