Friday-Saturday, August 29-30
Blue Recreation and Athletic Facility • Laramie, Wyo.
The third ranked Trojans volleyball team will continue the 2025 season this weekend (Aug. 29-30) with four matches at the Springhill Suites Cheyenne Invitational, hosted by Laramie County Community College. The Trojans are set to kick off the set of matches Friday against top-10 Northeastern JC at 4:00 p.m. and the host Laramie County CC at 8:00 p.m. The tournament will conclude Saturday afternoon as the ladies face off against Central Arizona College at 11:00 a.m. and then end the tournament against Casper College at 5:00 p.m.
The No. 3-ranked Trojans opened the season in dominant fashion at the Midland Kick-Off Classic, sweeping all four opponents for a perfect 12-0 set record. Colby's offense has been sharp early, averaging 14.92 kills per set while hitting at a strong .267 clip. Sophomore Karlotta Kattai has led the charge at the net, tallying 74 kills in just four matches, a mark that ranks second nationally, trailing only a player who has competed in six matches. Her performance earned her KJCCC Player of the Week honors, and she looks to carry that momentum forward. Running the offense is sophomore standout Amanda Caputi, who currently leads the nation in assists per set averaging 11.75. Her impressive showing over the weekend was recognized with the KJCCC Setter of the Week award.
Last season, No. 6 Northeastern Junior College finished with an impressive 33-7 overall record, including a perfect 10-0 mark in conference play. The Plainswomen advanced to the NJCAA Tournament, where they ran into the Trojans who made a statement with a three-set sweep to end NJC's run. This fall, Northeastern is off to a 2-2 start after dropping its season opener to No. 12 Navarro College and later falling to nationally ranked Odessa College. Through 18 sets, the Plainswomen have recorded 189 kills while hitting .213 as a team. Their defensive presence at the net has also been strong, already posting 36 total blocks on the year. Offensively, Kiera Heaven Loe has been the go-to attacker, ranking 13th nationally with 60 kills. Returner Kaitlyb Barnes has also provided steady production, sitting 29th in the nation in total kills.
Host Laramie County Community College also enters the weekend at 2-2 after dropping matches to No. 11 New Mexico Military Institute and Amarillo College at the NMMI Classic. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 2024 season in which they finished 13-21 overall and 6-6 in conference play. Experience is a strength for this group, with nine sophomores listed on the roster. Offensively, Lea Susoy has set the tone early, leading the team with 61 kills on the year and averaging 3.39 per set.
Central Arizona College is off to a strong start this fall, opening the season 3-0 with wins over Western Wyoming, Glendale, and Central Wyoming. The Vaqueras are coming off a solid 2024 campaign in which they finished above .500 overall and went 8-4 in ACCAC play. This year's squad brings back seven returners, including standout Olivia Bartrina, who currently leads the ACCAC in both kills per set (4.33) and total kills (52). At the net, sophomore middle blocker Maya Schirmer has been a force defensively, ranking fourth in the conference with 1.17 blocks per set.
Casper College has started the 2025 campaign on a high note, opening with a perfect 4-0 record after sweeping through the NPCC Opening Weekend Tournament in North Platte, Neb. The strong start comes on the heels of a rebuilding year, as the T-Birds finished just 8-24 last season. Looking to turn the page, Casper has brought in a large freshman class with 13 newcomers making up the core of this year's roster. Leading the charge early has been Aubrey Hackett, who tops the team with 41 kills while averaging 3.42 per set. Hackett has also been a force defensively, recording 16 total blocks including 13 assisted and three solo.
Following the tournament, the Trojans will turn their attention to conference play, opening at home against rival Garden City CC next Wednesday (Sept. 3) at 6:30 PM. Colby will then continue conference action on Saturday (Sept. 6) at 2:00m PM with a matchup against Cloud County CC.
