WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 19 Colby Community College men's cross country team opened the season with a sixth-place finish out of 14 teams at the JK Gold Classic in Wichita, Kansas. The Trojans also stood out as the second best finish as a team from the KJCCC.
In the men's 6k, sophomore Kenan Delestre set the tone for the Trojans with a strong front-running performance. Delestre stayed within the lead pack through the early stages of the race and held his position against a competitive field, ultimately crossing the line in eighth place with a time of 19:08.91. His top-10 finish gave Colby an early low stick and provided momentum for the rest of the lineup.
Behind him, Enoha Reizabal-Bellanger delivered a solid effort in his collegiate debut, finishing 32nd overall in 19:50.90. Reizabal-Bellanger maintained his spot in the middle of the chase pack and provided a steady No. 2 scorer for the Trojans.
Rounding out the top five were Thomas Calas (50th, 20:26.25), Alexandre LeRoy (58th, 20:31.19), and Andrew Berger (62nd, 20:38.96). The group worked together through much of the race, with less than 15 seconds separating the trio at the finish line. That kind of pack running is crucial in tightening up the scoring spread, and it helped the Trojans lock in a top-half team placement in a field of 14 squads.
On the women's side, freshman Nadine McIntyre paced the Trojans with a top-20 finish, placing 17th overall in the 5k with a time of 19:39.75. She was followed by freshman Laina Larson (70th, 21:54.17), Kaylen McAtee (112th, 28:20.28), and Adriana Phillips (114th, 28:53.71).
The Trojans return to action next Saturday (Sept. 13) at the Muthama-Rogers Invitational hosted by Bethel College. The race will take place in North Newton, KS as they continue their fall schedule.
