Jimmy May Open Concludes Regular Season for No. 7 Women’s Wrestling
The Trojans women’s wrestling team competed at the Jimmy May Open hosted by Baker University this past Saturday, highlighted by a strong performance from Kaylen McAtee at 160 pounds.
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Colby Trojans women's wrestling team competed at the Jimmy May Open hosted by Baker University Saturday (Feb. 14), highlighted by a strong performance from Kaylen McAtee at 160 pounds.
At 160 pounds, Kaylen McAtee led the way for the Trojans, earning 5.5 team points on the day. She opened the tournament with an impressive first-round victory, defeating Mya Willis of Missouri Valley College by fall at 2:27. McAtee moved into the championship second round before falling to Billie Bonwell of Southeast Community College by fall at 4:06.
McAtee rebounded in the consolation bracket, defeating Belle Hernandez of Baker University by injury default to advance. Her tournament run came to an end in the following round after a hard-fought match against Justice Thomas of Ottawa University, who secured the win by fall at 2:56.
Competing unattached, Aspen Sharpe opened her day at 110 pounds with a first-round bye before falling to Rihanna Mora of Missouri Valley College by fall at 2:13 in the championship second round. Sharpe later dropped her consolation match to Teya Garner of William Penn University by fall at 1:22.
The Jimmy May Open concludes the regular-season schedule for the Colby Trojans, who now turn their full attention to the NJCAA Women's Wrestling National Championships set for March 6–7 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. The Trojans will look to build on their first season's progress as they prepare to compete against the nation's top junior college programs on the national stage.
