It was a milestone week for the Colby Community College women's wrestling program, one that showcased growth and grit across multiple competitions. After a tough road loss to Southeast Community College, the Trojans rebounded to make history with their first dual win in program history over Midland University that same night, then capped the week with several standout performances at Friday's (Oct. 31) Falcon Open in Wichita, KS.
On Wednesday (Oct. 29), Southeast controlled much of the dual in a 41-6 win over Colby. Despite the setback, the Trojans showed plenty of fight across the lineup. Destiny Gonzalez led the way with an 11-1 technical fall in 2:54 at 145 pounds, giving Colby its lone win of the night. Kaylen McAtee also battled hard at 160 pounds, extending her match into the fourth minute before falling by technical fall.
Colby turned things around in historic fashion that same night. The Trojans earned their first-ever dual victory, defeating Midland University 28-21 behind a complete team effort. Cristina Palacio Martinez opened with a forfeit win at 103 pounds, and Audrie Felkins followed by earning a fall at 110 in 4:42. Emma Parker added a pin at 131 pounds, while Gonzalez once again provided the spark at 145, defeating a NAIA ranked opponent, 8-4, in a gritty three-period match. Late forfeits from Makalynn Spresser and Emma Hahn sealed the historic result, marking a defining moment for the second-year program.
The momentum carried into Friday's Falcon Open, where multiple Trojans placed and several turned in career-best performances. Emma Hahn led the way with a runner-up finish at 207 pounds, earning pins and technical falls on her way to the finals before falling to Doane's Jessica Rodriguez. Teammate Catherine Dutton (unattached) joined her on the podium, finishing third at 207 after pinning Madison Welch in the consolation semifinals and earning a 12-2 technical fall in the third-place bout.
At 180 pounds, Aime Hernandez Perez (unattached) put together an outstanding tournament run, finishing third overall with five wins on the day. She opened with a 10-2 decision, followed by a technical fall and a pin, and closed her run with a second-period fall (2:59) over Karla Martinez of Friends University to secure a spot on the podium.
The Trojans also had several strong showings across the lighter weights. Isabella Garrity wrestled her way deep into the 117-pound bracket, notching three consecutive wins in the consolation rounds, including pins at 0:57 and 0:49, plus a 10-0 tech fall, before bowing out in the semifinals. Atavia Cain turned in a dominant stretch at 160 pounds, earning three straight victories (two technical falls and a pin) to reach the consolation semifinals. Emma Parker also advanced deep at 131, picking up multiple pins before being edged out of the placing rounds.
The Trojans will look to build on their momentum as they continue through the early portion of the season. Their focus lies ahead with two back to back home events set for Friday (Nov. 14) and Saturday (Nov. 15) at the Dust Bowl Duals/Open.
