HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Colby Trojans women's basketball team battled No. 17 Hutchinson Community College tough on the road Wednesday (Feb. 18) night, but a decisive third-quarter run by the Blue Dragons proved to be the difference in a 50–42 loss.
Colby delivered one of its strongest defensive performances of the season, holding Hutchinson to just 50 points, the Blue Dragons' third-lowest scoring output of the yea, but struggled to generate consistent offense down the stretch.
The Trojans came out locked in defensively, setting the tone early in a back-and-forth opening quarter. Hutchinson narrowly led 10–9 after the first, but Colby continued to battle in the second period, matching the Blue Dragons possession for possession. Colby put together a strong second quarter behind efficient shooting and solid ball movement, taking a 16–15 edge in the frame to send the game into halftime tied at 25–25.
The Trojans opened the second half with momentum, scoring consecutive buckets to briefly take control. However, the turning point came when forward Dessirae Ulmer picked up her third foul early in the third quarter, forcing her to the bench. With one of Colby's key contributors sidelined, Hutchinson capitalized with a decisive run. The Blue Dragons outscored the Trojans 19–6 in the quarter, creating the separation that ultimately decided the contest.
Colby continued to fight in the fourth quarter, holding Hutchinson to just six points in the final period while attempting to chip away at the deficit. Despite the defensive effort, the Trojans could not overcome the third-quarter gap.
Amisha Russell led the Trojans with 12 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and knocking down four three-pointers while playing all 40 minutes. Ulmer added 10 points and four rebounds, going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Elia Ando provided a strong spark off the bench with six points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting performance and three rebounds.
Colby struggled offensively as a team, shooting 37.8% from the field (17-of-45) and committing 21 turnovers, which Hutchinson converted into key scoring opportunities. The Trojans were outrebounded 33–29 but held the Blue Dragons to just 35.1% shooting. For Hutchinson, Kaia Smith led all scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Delora Pricop added 10 points off the bench.
The Colby Trojans now hold a record of 14–12 (11–9 KJCCC) and return to the road Saturday (Feb. 21) to face Pratt, who enters on a 16-game losing streak after Colby won the previous matchup by more than 40 points. Despite its record, Pratt is led by scoring threats Polla Balint and Kalani Brock, with Brock ranking third in the conference in rebounding and leading the league in steals. The Trojans will look to carry their defensive momentum into another conference win against the Beavers.
