The Trojans women's basketball team hits the road this week for a pair of critical conference matchups, traveling to No. 17 Hutchinson Wednesday (Feb. 18) before heading to Pratt on Saturday (Feb. 21) in games that could carry major conference implications.
Colby enters the week riding momentum after a dominant conference victory over previously ranked Coffeyville. The Trojans secured a convincing 19-point win while holding the Red Ravens to just 46 points in one of their most complete defensive performances of the season.
Sophomore Desiree Ulmer has powered the Trojans' recent surge, delivering standout performances in back-to-back games. She scored an efficient 22 points against Coffeyville before erupting for 33 points against No. 3 Dodge City Community College. Ulmer leads Colby with 14.5 points per game while also averaging 7.4 rebounds.
Olivia Hultgren provides another offensive spark, averaging 10.3 points per contest and knocking down two three-pointers per game. Sophomore point guard Piri Lewis directs the offense, leading the team with 3.8 assists per game while contributing 3.6 rebounds.
Hutchinson enters the matchup on a six-game winning streak and has won nine of its last 10 games, presenting one of the toughest challenges remaining on Colby's schedule. Their record is 21-5 (16-4 KJCCC) as they feature a balanced attack, led by Katie Duncan and KaMyra Barber, who each average just over 13 points per game. Barber also leads the team on the glass with seven rebounds per contest. Hutchinson's depth is evident with eight players averaging at least one assist per game, paced by Whitney Brown's 4.1 assists.
In the previous meeting, the Trojans stayed within striking distance at home but struggled down the stretch, scoring just five points in the fourth quarter. Recently, however, Colby's late-game execution has improved significantly, and the Trojans will look to finish strong in a hostile road environment against a ranked opponent.
Following the Hutchinson matchup, Colby travels to Pratt to face a team currently 6–19 (2–18 KJCCC). Pratt enters the contest on a 16-game losing streak after Colby dominated the previous meeting at home, winning by more than 40 points while holding Pratt to just 30 points.
Despite its record, Pratt features a dangerous scoring duo in Polla Balint and Kalani Brock, who both average over 12 points per game. Brock leads the team with eight rebounds per contest, ranking third in the conference in rebounding while also leading the league in steals. Balint ranks among the conference leaders in field goal percentage, giving Pratt an efficient offensive presence. The Trojans will look to maintain their defensive intensity and secure another decisive conference victory on the road.
With momentum building and postseason positioning on the line, Colby aims to continue its strong play and come away with two crucial conference wins this week.
