LIBERAL, Kan. - Colby Trojans softball endured a challenging doubleheader at Seward County, dropping both games Wednesday (April 22). The Trojans were held hitless in the opener before responding with a much stronger offensive showing in game two, collecting eight hits and scoring five runs.
Game 1
Colby opened its series at Seward County with a tough 8–0 loss in five innings, as the Saints held the Trojans hitless in game one.
Seward County jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding two more in the third before breaking things open with a four-run fifth. The Trojans were limited to just one baserunner all game, a walk from Ella McDonald, as they were unable to solve Seward starter Aaliyah Arredondo.
Amithys Perez led the offensive surge for Seward County, driving in six runs on a dominant day at the plate that included a home run and a double.
In the circle, Cheyenne Cramer struck out nine over 4.1 innings but was tagged with the loss, while Colby's defense committed three errors that led to multiple unearned runs.
Game 2
Colby showed more fight in game two of the doubleheader, but ultimately fell 11–5 to Seward County, dropping the doubleheader.
Seward County set the tone early, plating a run in the first before a big second inning pushed the lead to 4–0. The Saints then broke things open in the third, capitalizing on walks and wild pitches to score four more runs and extend the advantage to 8–2.
Colby answered in the third inning when Emmy Supernor delivered a clutch two-RBI single to score Briley Christensen and Brooke Zinken, cutting into the deficit. The Trojans added two more in the fourth, taking advantage of a wild pitch and a Seward error to make it 8–4.
After Seward responded with two runs in the fourth to stretch the lead back to six, Kylan Sorenson provided a highlight for Colby in the fifth, blasting a solo home run to left field to make it 10–5. However, that would be as close as the Trojans would get, as Seward added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the 11–5 final.
Offensively, Colby recorded eight hits, with Ava Pezely leading the way with two hits and a run scored, while Sorenson added two hits and an RBI. Supernor drove in two runs, and Dayana Miller and Brooklynn Ekker each contributed extra-base hits, including a triple and a double, respectively. Briley Christensen also showed patience at the plate, drawing four walks.
In the circle, Alison Nikolaus took the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) over 2.2 innings, while Katelyn Zukewich tossed three innings in relief. Control proved costly for the Trojans' pitching staff, as they issued 12 walks that led to multiple scoring opportunities for Seward County.
The Trojans will now head home after going 0–6 on their road conference stretch. Colby, who once sat atop the conference standings, has slipped to fourth place as the regular season winds down. They'll look to regroup this weekend with a key matchup against fifth-place Barton on Saturday (April 25). The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will also host a tailgate event leading up to first pitch, featuring lemonade, popsicles and a poster-making setup for fans to show their support.
