Trojans Open Rodeo Season on Home Dirt

There was a full slate of action this past weekend as the Colby CC Rodeo brought in top competitors from across the region. The three-day event featured strong performances from both men's and women's teams, with Fort Hays State and Fort Scott claiming the overall titles.
The men's division saw Fort Scott dominate with 655 points, followed by Southeastern Oklahoma State (535) and Panhandle State (370). On the women's side, Fort Hays State captured the team crown with 395 points, edging Southwestern Oklahoma State's 380. Panhandle State rounded out the top three with 170.
Colby Community College was well represented across the board, with eleven athletes battling it out on their home dirt. In tie-down roping, Kade Homm kept the rope tight and finished 38th with a 22.4. The Trojans showed depth in breakaway, entering six cowgirls, led by Dali Reser who stopped the clock at 12.6 for 44th, while teammates Sadee Adamson, Alaura Crockett-Armijo, Mara Kats, Rylie Sexson, and Andrea Hull Cantillo all threw their hats in the ring.
Lakoddah Downes muscled through in steer wrestling, and in goat tying, Brooklynn Hughes (50th, 11.2) and Reser (53rd, 13.3) turned in solid efforts on the ground. The team roping box also featured two Trojan pairs, with Sexson/Reser and Downes/Homm making runs together. Barrel racing brought the biggest Colby lineup of the weekend, where Crockett-Armijo set the pace for the squad with a 17.33 to place 39th. Hughes followed with a 17.63 (56th), Sexson clocked an 18.11 (75th), and Sakara Smith turned in an 18.71 (96th). Rounding out the pack, Ariella Carnegie (24.02) and Kats (26.35) pushed hard to the finish line, closing out Colby's strong presence in the arena.
The weekend also showcased impressive individual efforts. Fort Scott's Jence Griffith rode to victory in the bareback with a score of 78, while Panhandle State's Zane Kreikemeier turned in a lightning-fast 9.4 in tie-down roping — more than a second clear of the field. Panhandle State added another win as Layni Masters took the breakaway roping in 2.2 seconds. Fort Scott swept the saddle bronc podium, led by Jett Williams' 76-point ride.
In steer wrestling, Fort Hays State's Ryder Dent stopped the clock at 5.4 seconds, while Southwestern Oklahoma's Reagan McIntyre won goat tying with a 7.5. The team roping title went to Brandt O'Connor (SWOSU) and Nicholas Lovins (Garden City) with a 6.4 run. Fort Hays State added another victory as Hailey Witte clocked 16.14 in the barrel race. Murray State's Labrant Wilson highlighted the bull riding with a 78-point effort, joined by two additional 70+ rides from Southeastern's Waylon Buquoi and Caden Bunch.
