TOPEKA, Kan. – The Colby Trojans men's track and field opened the 2026 indoor season in impressive fashion at the Washburn Rust Buster Friday (Jan. 16). The team turned in three NJCAA qualifying marks, including a school record in the weight throw.
Colby's sprints were led by sophomore Javano Bridgewater. Bridgewater captured first place with a time of 47.82 in the 400 meters, an NJCAA qualifying mark and a new personal best. The performance puts him second all-time in Colby school history, continuing Bridgewater's rise as one of the program's premier sprinters.
Distance standout Kenan Delestre delivered one of the most impressive all-around performances of the meet. Delestre finished third in the mile with a time of 4:15.31, an NJCAA national qualifying mark and a new personal best that places him inside the top 10 all-time in Colby program history. He followed that effort with another third-place finish in the 3000 meters, clocking 8:23.63, which also served as an NJCAA national qualifier. The performance marked another personal best and moved Delestre from ninth to seventh in the school record book. Delestre's double podium, double-qualifying performance was one of many highlights on the day.
Colby's throws squad made a major statement, led by freshman Tristan King, who had a historic opening meet. King finished 11th in the weight throw with a mark of 15.03 meters (49-3.75), setting a new school record in the first collegiate meet of his career. He also placed 17th in the shot put with a throw of 12.77 meters (41-10.75), which ranks as the fourth-best mark in program history.
Sophomore Jared Cox added another highlight in the weight throw, finishing 13th with a personal-best throw of 14.94 meters (49-0.25). While Cox remains third in the Colby record book. Sophomore Deangelo Delancy competed in both throws as well.
In the 800 meters, Alexandre LeRoy led the Trojans with an eighth-place finish in 1:56.90, followed closely by Thomas Calas in 11th (1:57.14). The sprint group opened the season solidly in the 300 meters, with freshman Jonathan Mader finishing 14th in 36.32 and leading the 300 meter pack.
Colby also showcased its depth in the 4x400-meter relay, entering two squads at the meet. The squad of Jonathan Mader, Jairus Turrbiates, Harley McPherson, and Javano Bridgewater posted a time of 3:23.09, earning a seventh-place finish and establishing themselves among the top relay groups early in the indoor season. The second team, consisting of Irad Mixon, Leonardo Clement, Finley Beaven, and Thomas Calas, also delivered a strong performance, crossing the line in 3:28.14.
The Trojans will now turn their attention to next weekend's NAIA/JUCO Challenge in Pittsburg, KS. set for Saturday (Jan. 24) as they look to build on a strong opening performance.
