DODGE CITY, Kan. - Colby Trojans baseball picked up a road doubleheader sweep over Dodge City on Friday (May 1), using a combination of dominant pitching and explosive offense to earn 4-1 and 14-5 victories. The Trojans set the tone early in Game 1 behind a complete-game effort on the mound from Anthony Deblois, then carried that momentum into Game 2 with one of their most productive offensive performances of the series.
Game 1
Colby Trojan baseball opened the series in Dodge City with a strong all-around performance, earning a 4-1 victory behind a dominant complete-game effort from Quebec freshman Anthony Deblois.
After a scoreless first inning, Dodge City struck first in the second, using a base hit and productive outs to take a 1-0 lead. That would be the only run the Conquistadors managed all afternoon.
Colby responded in the third inning, as Matthew Kesting evened the score with a solo home run to right field, shifting momentum back to the Trojans. The offense continued to build in the fourth. Jacob Mraz delivered the biggest swing of the game with a two-run home run to right, giving Colby a 3-1 advantage. The Trojans added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Charlie Langford launched a solo shot to extend the lead to 4-1.
Colby finished with six hits on the day, with Turner Zdunich leading the way with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double. Mraz drove in a team-high two RBIs, while Kesting and Langford each added a home run and an RBI.
On the mound, Anthony Deblois turned in a complete-game performance, going all seven innings while allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out six and walked one, consistently keeping Dodge City off balance and limiting scoring opportunities.
Dodge City managed five hits in the contest, with Preston Harrison leading the way with two, but the Conquistadors were unable to string together enough offense against Deblois.
Game 2
The Trojans then completed the doubleheader sweep in Dodge City with a dominant 14-5 victory in Game 2, powered by a breakout offensive performance from multiple Trojans.
Dodge City struck first in the opening inning on a solo home run from Hunter Morgan, but Colby answered quickly in the second. Anthony Deblois evened the score with a solo shot to left field, setting the tone for a big day offensively.
The Trojans took control in the fourth inning, as Callum Thomson delivered a two-run single to give Colby a 3-1 advantage. From there, Colby continued to apply pressure before breaking the game open in the sixth.
Colby erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning on five hits. Matt Murray started the rally with a two-run single, Caden Clifford added an RBI after being hit by a pitch, and Charlie Langford delivered a key two-run double. Turner Zdunich capped the inning with a two-run single, extending the lead to 10-1.
Dodge City responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Colby never let the momentum shift. Langford added a solo home run in the eighth inning, and the Trojans tacked on three more runs in the ninth to secure the 14-5 win.
Langford led the offensive explosion, going 4-for-6 with four RBIs, including two doubles and a home run. Colby finished with 16 hits as a team, with multiple players contributing. Deblois (3-for-4), Thomson (3-for-4), Murray (2-for-5), and Zdunich (2-for-5) all turned in multi-hit performances, while Clifford drove in three runs.
On the mound, Tommy Mann earned the win, going six innings while allowing five runs on five hits and striking out three. Trey Schroeder provided strong relief, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two to close out the game.
Dodge City managed six hits in the contest, with Will Soto driving in three runs and Morgan collecting two hits, but the Conquistadors were unable to keep pace with Colby's offensive surge.
The Trojans combined for 18 runs on 22 hits across the doubleheader while playing clean, error-free defense in both contests. With the regular season now complete, Colby shifts its focus to postseason play in Kansas City, Kansas, where they will face the Blue Devils in a best-of-three series, with all games scheduled for nine innings.
The matchup carries added significance after the Trojans were swept in non-conference play earlier in the season, although those games were competitive and the teams most recently met just a few weeks ago. That familiarity sets the stage for a tightly contested series as Colby looks to carry momentum from its strong finish into postseason action. Game 1 is set for Thursday (May 7) with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
