Riding the momentum of a run-rule victory over McCook, the Colby baseball team turns its focus to the most important stretch of the season, its final conference series against Dodge City. The three-game set begins Wednesday (April 29) at home before shifting to Dodge City on Friday (May 1), with major conference standings implications on the line.
Colby enters the week at 18-34 (10-18 KJCCC), sitting just one game back of both Dodge City and Garden City in a tightly packed middle of the standings. The Trojans have been especially competitive at home this season, holding a record above .500, and will look to carry that success into Wednesday's opener.
The Trojans offense has been one of the most explosive in the conference, hitting .312 as a team with a .525 slugging percentage and 82 home runs on the season. Colby is averaging over 7 runs per game and has consistently produced extra-base hits, making them a constant threat in the middle innings.
Leading the charge is KJCCC Player of the Week Turner Zdunich, who has put together one of the top offensive seasons in the conference. The sophomore is hitting .350 with a .720 slugging percentage and .440 on-base percentage, leading the team in home runs (13), RBI (46), triples (3) and walks (29). He has also recorded 17 multi-hit games and continues to be the centerpiece of the lineup.
Freshman Anthony Deblois has been one of the hottest hitters down the stretch, raising his average to .342 while slugging .641. Over the last month, Deblois has been a consistent extra-base threat, totaling nine home runs and driving in key runs in conference play. First baseman Callum Thomson has provided steady production all season, hitting .331 with a matching .641 slugging percentage. His 12 home runs rank among the team leaders, and his 30 RBI have come in several key situations throughout conference play. Charlie Langford is another bat to watch heading into the series. Langford is coming off a multi-home run performance last weekend and followed it up with a multi-extra base hit game against McCook.
Dodge City enters the series with a 22-27 (11-17 KJCCC), just ahead of Colby in the standings. The Conquistadors feature one of the most productive offenses in the league, hitting .345 as a team with a .551 slugging percentage and 58 home runs.
Ben Longoria has been one of the most dangerous hitters in the KJCCC, batting .446 with a .675 slugging percentage and consistently setting the tone at the top of the lineup. Cameron Stukenberg adds power with 12 home runs and 41 RBI, while Preston Harrison leads the team with 52 RBI and is hitting .323 on the season. On the mound, Dodge City has relied on Austen Raines, who has made seven starts and posted a 5.79 ERA over 28 innings pitched. While the Conquistadors' offense has carried much of the load, pitching depth could play a key role in the outcome of the series.
With just one conference series remaining, every inning carries weight. Colby sits within striking distance of moving up multiple spots in the standings with a strong showing this week. Adding to the opportunity, Garden City faces nationally ranked Hutchinson, opening the door for the Trojans to gain ground regardless of outside results. A series win could significantly shift the conference picture and give Colby momentum heading into postseason play.
