Multiple Podium Finishes Highlight No. 7 Women’s Wrestling at Cerritos Open
The Colby Trojans women’s wrestling team traveled to California this past Saturday to compete at the Cerritos Open, turning in several strong individual performances against a deep national field.
NORWALK, Cali. - The Colby Trojans women's wrestling team traveled to California this past Saturday (Feb. 7) to compete at the Cerritos Open, turning in several strong individual performances against a deep national field.
Catherine Dutton led the Trojans with a third-place finish at 207 pounds. Dutton opened the tournament with two dominant 10–0 technical fall victories, suffered a setback in the semifinals, and responded with back-to-back wins to secure a spot on the podium.
At 160 pounds, Kaylen McAtee put together an impressive run to finish third overall. After winning her opening bout and dropping her second match, McAtee caught fire, rattling off four consecutive victories, all by fall, to close out her tournament in emphatic fashion.
Atavia Cain competed at 145 pounds, winning her opening bout before falling by technical fall. She bounced back with two straight wins, but dropped her final two matches to finish sixth overall.
Destiny Gonzalez also earned a sixth-place finish, receiving a first-round bye before winning her next two bouts. Gonzalez battled through a tough closing stretch, falling in three straight matches to wrap up her tournament.
Colby also had representation from Audrie Felkins, Ayvah Reynoso, Emma Parker, and Jazrine Nieto, all of whom gained valuable experience against high-level competition.
The Trojans will have the upcoming weekend off on Saturday (Feb. 14) before turning their focus to the postseason, as they prepare for the NCWA National Championships on the first weekend of March.
