Bio
Joseph Cornejo was named the fifth Head Men’s Wrestling Coach at Colby Community College in April 2024. He brings over a decade of collegiate coaching experience, a passion for athlete development, and a commitment to building both academic and athletic excellence within the wrestling program.
Before arriving in Colby, Cornejo spent four seasons (2018–2022) as an assistant coach at Cowley College, where he helped guide the program to national prominence. During his tenure, Cowley produced six All-Americans—including the school’s first national champion—and three Academic All-Americans.
Cornejo began his college coaching career at Midland University (2011–2018), where he contributed to both the men’s and women’s wrestling programs. Over seven seasons, Midland saw 24 All-Americans and two national champions. In addition, he established and led the Mud Dogs freestyle and Greco-Roman club, coaching athletes from the college, high school, and youth levels.
“I was drawn to Colby because of the program’s rich wrestling tradition,” said Cornejo. “What I bring to the table will help return Colby wrestling to the top, where it belongs.”
In his first season at Colby Community College, Coach Cornejo made an immediate impact by guiding Cha'mari Johnson to All-American honors.
With his proven track record and passion for student-athlete development, Coach Cornejo is poised to lead Trojan Wrestling into a new era of success.
