DES MOINES, Iowa - The Colby Community College men's wrestling team turned in a full day of action at the Grand View Open Saturday (Nov. 15), competing in a deep and competitive Freshman/Sophomore bracket. Heavyweight Bob Tatum delivered the highlight of the tournament for the Trojans, powering his way to a fifth-place finish and scoring 16 team points.
Tatum was sharp throughout the day. After receiving a first-round bye, he opened with a 13-6 decision over Iowa State Club's Paul Ballard and followed it with a pin against Lindsey Wilson's Jaylin Bien-Aime. He continued his momentum in the quarterfinals, grinding out a tough 7-4 win against Montana State–Northern's AJ Harris to reach the semifinals. Tatum ultimately took fifth after battling through the consolations and earning a medical forfeit victory in the placement match, capping off one of the strongest tournaments of his young career.
Colby also saw several wrestlers make noise in the middle weights. At 133, Talon Suttles put together one of the team's most impressive consolation runs. After a second-round loss, he rattled off three straight wins, including a tech fall, a decision, and a pin, to score five team points and advance deep into the bracket. Teammate Elijah Sierra added three more points at the same weight, picking up a fall and a tight decision before bowing out in the third round of the consolations.
At 149, Scotty Engle produced another strong start for the Trojans, pinning his first two opponents and advancing into the championship quarterfinals on the strength of a dominant early-round performance. Bryant Jones (174) added 5.5 points of his own after opening with an injury-default win and later securing a fall in the consolations.
Several other Trojans gained valuable experience in their first Grand View Open, including Tevin Jackson (125), Savieon Garrison (133), Sebastian Rodriguez (141), Ayden Wohlgemuth (157), Cah'mari Johnson (165), Gunner Owens (174), Kash Alley (184), and David Ozuna (197).
With Tatum leading the way and several Trojans making meaningful strides in their brackets, Colby leaves Des Moines with plenty to build on moving forward. The pace picks up this week as the team hits the road for a tri-dual Friday (Nov. 21) against Southeast and Otero before heading north to Kearney, NE for the UNK Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday (Nov. 22).
