The Colby Trojans women's basketball team will continue conference play this Wednesday (Jan. 21) with a road trip to Independence before returning home Sunday (Jan. 25) to host Seward County.
The Trojans are coming off a tough road loss against No. 11 Butler but remain one of the strongest defensive teams in the KJCCC, holding opponents to just 56.5 points per game, the fourth-best mark in the conference. Offensively, Desiree Ulmer leads Colby, averaging 13.7 points per game while also pacing the team on the glass at 7.1 rebounds per contest. Olivia Hultgren has been finding her rhythm in recent games and ranks second on the team in scoring at 10.0 points per game. Piri Lewis has provided a spark off the bench and now leads the Trojans in assists at 2.9 per game, while also averaging 1.3 steals. Lewis played a key role in Colby's late surge against Garden City, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists to help pull the Trojans away down the stretch.
Independence enters the matchup at 4-14 overall with just one conference win. The Pirates are currently riding a seven-game losing streak and remain winless at home this season. Colby dominated the first meeting between the two teams, holding Independence to just 24 total points and keeping the Pirates in single digits in every quarter.
Ulmer led the way with a 21-point double-double. Independence is led by Mimi White, who averages 10.0 points per game while shooting 31 percent from three-point range. White has shown the ability to score in bunches, posting two games of 20 or more points this season.
Seward County comes into Sunday's matchup with a 13-5 (8-4 KJCCC) and will first host Cloud County on Wednesday. The Saints average 71.2 points per game and are led by sophomore standout Avery Marchino, who tops the conference at 19.5 points per game. The Saints feature balanced scoring with Grace Posch running the offense. Posch ranks fourth in the KJCCC in assists, dishing out 4.0 per game, while Seward has two additional players averaging double figures.
The Trojans led for stretches in the previous meeting at Seward County before falling late. With the Saints currently sitting fifth in the conference standings, a win Sunday would be a significant boost for Colby.
Colby enters the week tied for seventh place in the KJCCC with Cowley, as both teams sit at 6-6 in conference play, making the upcoming stretch critical as the season heads into its final few weeks of play.
