Women's Basketball Earns Key Road Win at Barton
The Trojans picked up a significant conference victory Tuesday night, grinding out a 57–51 road win over the Barton Cougars to improve to 5-4 (2-1 KJCCC).
GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Colby Community College women's basketball team earned a major road victory Tuesday night, defeating Barton Community College 57–51 to move to 5–4 (2–1 KJCCC). The Trojans put together one of their most complete defensive efforts of the young season, holding Barton to just 27.7% shooting from the field and 18.2% from three, while limiting the Cougars to only 16 points in the paint.
Colby's efficiency proved decisive, outshooting Barton across the board, 38.3% to 27.7% from the field, 37.5% to 18.2% from deep, and a strong 88.2% to 84.6% at the free-throw line. The Trojans also dominated the bench scoring 18–0, despite Barton holding a 40–35 edge on the glass and a 14–6 advantage in second-chance points. Both teams finished with 11 assists, but Barton turned Colby's 15 turnovers into 13 points, compared to just 2 points off turnovers for the Trojans. The game featured three ties and three lead changes, with Colby's largest lead of nine coming midway through the third quarter.
Offensively, sophomore Jera Kruleski led the way with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and a perfect 4-of-4 at the line, while Dessirae Ulmer powered the interior with 14 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Olivia Hultgren provided a crucial boost off the bench, adding 11 points, two three-pointers, and 5 assists, helping Colby maintain control late. Logan Nolan chipped in 3 points and 4 rebounds, and Easha Potts added 4 points with strong interior defense.
Barton was led by Regina Donanu (14 points) and Mary Akinde, who posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Cougars struggled to find any rhythm offensively, hampered throughout the night by Colby's defensive pressure both inside and beyond the perimeter. Barton finished just 18-for-65 from the field, unable to consistently break through the Trojans defense.
Colby returns home tomorrow (Nov. 29) looking to extend its conference momentum as they host Cowley College. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. at the Colby Event Center, and thanks to NWKS Radio, admission is free for all fans.
