The road to postseason softball begins now for the Colby Trojans, and the stage is set for what could be one of the most exciting Region 6 tournaments in recent memory. With one of the most dangerous offenses in the conference, Colby heads to Dodge City looking to make noise at the 2026 NJCAA Region 6 Division I Softball Tournament.
Colby enters the bracket ready for a first-round showdown against Barton on Friday (May 8) at noon on Field 2 in what could be one of the pivotal opening games of the tournament. A victory would push the Trojans into the winners bracket and set up a matchup later Friday afternoon against either top-seeded Hutchinson or No. 8 Pratt at 4 p.m. A loss, however, would send Colby into the elimination bracket, where every game becomes win-or-go-home the rest of the way.
Colby enters postseason play with one of the most explosive offenses in the KJCCC. The Trojans are hitting .332 as a team while slugging an impressive .551, powered by a program-record 72 home runs this season. Throughout the spring, Colby has proven capable of scoring in bunches, combining power throughout the lineup with speed and depth that has made the offense one of the toughest to contain in the conference.
At the center of it all has been sophomore star Briley Christensen, who has established herself as one of the premier hitters in the league. The former NJCAA National Player of the Week is batting .455, fourth-best in the KJCCC, while posting an.877 slugging percentage. Christensen has crushed 18 home runs, the second-highest total in the conference, while adding 29 extra-base hits, 64 RBIs, and 38 walks.
Brooke Zinken has delivered a breakout campaign of her own. Zinken enters tournament play hitting .400 with 13 home runs, ranking fifth in the conference, while also showcasing elite speed on the bases with 28 stolen bases, placing her among the KJCCC leaders. The Trojans' depth has been one of their greatest strengths all season, with seven different players batting above .300 entering the tournament.
Ava Pezely and Brooklynn Ekker have both provided key production offensively and defensively. Ekker is hitting .373 with 17 extra-base hits, continuing to consistently drive the ball into the gaps, while Pezely, a switch hitter, is batting .365 and has been a steady presence defensively in the outfield.
Inside the circle, the Trojans have relied on a versatile pitching staff to complement their offensive firepower. Cheyenne Cramer has carried a large workload this season, posting a 13-9 record with a 4.09 ERA across 121 innings pitched. Her 13 wins are tied for the second-most in the conference, and her experience will be critical in postseason play.
Katelyn Zukewich has also been a major contributor throughout the year and enters the tournament as one of the top strikeout pitchers in the KJCCC. Zukewich has totaled a conference-leading 124 strikeouts while averaging 7.68 strikeouts per seven innings, giving Colby another dangerous option capable of shutting down opposing lineups.
The Region 6 field features several battle-tested teams, including Hutchinson, Butler, Dodge City, Garden City, Seward County, Pratt, and Barton. Hutchinson enters as the top overall seed after capturing the conference title.
First pitch for Colby's tournament opener against Barton is scheduled for noon Friday at Legends Park in Dodge City, with postseason softball officially underway and plenty more action still to come.
