Softball Prepares for Crucial Conference Matchup with Dodge City

Colby softball heads into a pivotal weekend with four conference games on tap against Dodge City, opening with a home doubleheader on Friday (May 1) before traveling for another twin bill on Saturday (May 2). With the KJCCC standings tightening and postseason positioning on the line, the Trojans will look to take advantage of the opportunity in a matchup that could have a major impact on the playoff picture. 

Colby's offense has been one of the most explosive units in the conference this season, putting together a .339 team batting average to go along with a powerful .570 slugging percentage. The Trojans have already launched a program-record 71 home runs and continue to show no signs of slowing down at the plate. Leading the charge is Briley Christensen, who has been one of the premier hitters in the league all year. The former National Player of the Week is hitting .464, ranking fourth in the KJCCC, while posting an eye-popping .921 slugging percentage. She has totaled 28 extra-base hits, 18 home runs (second in the conference), drawn 38 walks, and driven in 61 runs, the third-highest total in the league.

Right alongside her, Brooke Zinken has delivered a standout season of her own, batting .420 with 13 home runs, good for fifth in the conference. She also adds another dimension with her speed, swiping 28 bases to rank among the top 10 in the KJCCC. Her all-around impact, paired with reliable defense in the outfield, forms a dynamic duo at the heart of Colby's lineup. The depth doesn't stop there, as seven Trojans are hitting above .300 on the year. Brooklynn Ekker has been particularly productive down the stretch, recording seven home runs, 31 RBIs, and a .626 slugging percentage.

In the circle, Colby has leaned on a steady and versatile pitching staff to back up its offensive firepower. Cheyenne Cramer has handled a significant workload, posting a 12-9 record with a 4.34 ERA across 121 innings pitched. Cramer's 12 wins is tied for second most in the conference. Katelyn Zukewich has also played a major role, racking up 113 strikeouts while averaging 7.83 strikeouts per seven innings. Her strikeout count ranks the most in the conference. Both pitchers recently reached milestones, with Zukewich surpassing 150 career strikeouts and Cramer eclipsing the 100 mark this past weekend.

Dodge City enters the matchup at 39-15 (21-7 KJCCC), with a four-game series now on tap following recent weather adjustments to the schedule. The Conquistadors bring one of the most potent offenses in the conference, hitting .381 as a team while posting an impressive .663 slugging percentage. Their power numbers mirror that production, as Dodge City has totaled 70 home runs on the season and consistently generates extra-base damage throughout the lineup.

At the top, Harley Shoaf has been one of the premier hitters in the conference, batting .477, third-best in the KJCCC, while adding seven triples and a .743 slugging percentage. Avery McCloskey provides the bulk of the power, leading the team with 15 home runs and pacing the roster with 36 extra-base hits, ranking among the conference leaders in both categories. Riley Moore has been the team's most consistent run producer, driving in 53 RBIs, the fifth-highest total in the conference, giving Dodge City a well-rounded and dangerous middle of the order.

In the circle, Dodge City pairs that offensive firepower with a deep and reliable pitching staff. Karli George headlines the group, leading the conference with 17 wins while posting a 3.17 ERA across more than 100 innings pitched. She has also recorded 111 strikeouts, ranking second in the KJCCC. Jordyn Boxberger gives the Conquistadors another strong option, carrying a 3.34 ERA over 86 innings. With multiple capable arms available, Dodge City has the depth to manage a condensed schedule and remain competitive across all four games of the series.

The KJCCC playoff race is tightening down the stretch, with Hutchinson currently holding the top spot and Butler sitting in second. Colby and Dodge City are locked in a battle for third place, making this upcoming series even more critical.
