Originally scheduled to host Dodge City on Wednesday (April 1), that matchup has been pushed back to May 1, shifting the focus directly to a key conference doubleheader against Garden City at home on Saturday (April 4).
Colby has been one of the most explosive offensive teams in the conference, hitting .355 as a team with a .600 slugging percentage. The Trojans are powered by standout performer Briley Christensen, who continues to put together a remarkable season. The national player of the week is hitting an eye-popping .511 (second in the conference) with a 1.023 slugging percentage, racking up nearly 20 extra-base hits, including 13 home runs, while also drawing 28 walks and driving in 43 runs.
Brooke Zinken has provided plenty of support in the lineup, hitting .455 with 11 home runs, while also adding a team-high 22 stolen bases. Both Christensen and Zinken are second and third in homerun conference leaders. Overall, the Trojans boast depth throughout the order, with eight players recording double-digit RBIs this season.
In the circle, Cheyenne Cramer has led the way with a 9-3 record and 4.24 ERA across 76 innings pitched. Katelyn Zukewich has also been a key contributor, posting a 5.95 ERA while tallying 73 strikeouts and averaging 8.52 strikeouts per seven innings.
Garden City enters the weekend at 20-16 (7-7 KJCCC). The two teams previously split a doubleheader earlier this season in Garden City, setting the stage for another competitive matchup.
Offensively, the Broncs have been just as dangerous, hitting .382 as a team with a .604 slugging percentage. They are led by Maysen Kurene-Iwakau, who is batting .486 with a slugging percentage over 1.000, totaling 30 extra-base hits, including 14 home runs (most in the conference). Garden City also features four hitters batting over .400, including Maiarangi Waipara, who is hitting .431 with 10 home runs and a slugging percentage north of .800.
In the circle, Skylah Breeze Joyce has been a steady presence with a 7-5 record and a 4.15 ERA over 55.2 innings pitched, while averaging 7.92 strikeouts per seven innings.
With two high-powered offenses and solid pitching on both sides, Saturday's doubleheader is shaping up to be a key early test in the second half of conference play.
