Bio

Mathew Scott was named Head Cross Country Coach at Colby Community College in August 2025. He brings more than 16 years of experience coaching both collegiate and high school athletes, with a proven record of developing successful runners and building competitive programs at every level.

Scott arrived in Colby after serving as Head Cross Country and Assistant Track Coach at Virginia Military Institute, where he guided the Keydets to multiple All-Southern Conference honors, including two All-SoCon selections in cross country. During his tenure, his athletes produced 28 total All-Conference performances across track and cross country and broke several school records in the middle-distance events.

Before his time at VMI, Scott gained Kansas Jayhawk Conference experience as Director of Cross Country and Track at Pratt Community College. His leadership elevated the Beavers to new heights, producing two NJCAA All-Americans, 17 All-KJCCC honorees, seven All-Region VI selections, and 10 new school records.

Scott’s résumé also includes stops at Ottawa University (NAIA), where he mentored four NAIA national qualifiers and helped the Braves to a third-place KCAC team finish in 2019, and at Alderson Broaddus University (NCAA DII), where he assisted with breaking 11 school records and coaching five All-GMAC performers.

At the high school level in South Dakota, Scott established himself as a program builder. At Ipswich Public School, he guided the Tigers to back-to-back SDHSAA Girls’ State Cross Country Championships in 2014 and 2015. He also founded the cross country and track programs at Aberdeen Christian School, leading them to multiple regional team titles and state medalist performances.

A native of Watertown, South Dakota, Scott earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Northern State University and a Master’s in Sport Science from Ohio University. He also holds USATF Level 2 Endurance and USATF Level 1 certifications, along with CPR/AED/First Aid credentials.
