COLBY, Kan. - The Colby Trojans closed out non-conference play on a high note Monday (April 27), using a dominant offensive performance to defeat McCook 15-5 and avoid a season-series sweep.
Colby racked up 16 hits in the win, highlighted by a big day from Jake Brooks, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Charlie Langford matched him hit-for-hit, finishing 3-for-4 while driving in a team-high four runs as the Trojans lineup proved relentless from top to bottom.
The Trojans struck first in the opening inning when Nolan Adamski delivered an RBI single, but McCook responded in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Colby quickly answered back, reclaiming a 3-2 advantage in the bottom half of the inning behind timely execution and situational hitting.
After McCook tied the game at 3-3 in the third, the Trojans broke things open in a decisive bottom half of the inning. Colby plated five runs on seven hits, with Karson Cassidy delivering the biggest swing, a two-run double that sparked an offensive surge and gave the Trojans an 8-3 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Colby continued to apply pressure throughout the game, adding three more runs in the fifth inning on Brooks' home run to left, before putting the finishing touches on the run-rule victory with a four-run sixth inning.
On the mound, Tyson Mosenteen earned the win, going three innings while allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out three. The Trojans' bullpen shut the door the rest of the way, as Grant Myers, Jaxon Nielsen and Turner Zdunich combined to limit McCook to just two runs over the final four innings.
Cassidy, Adamski, and Carter Graham each added multi-hit performances for Colby, while the Trojans also showcased aggressiveness on the basepaths with three stolen bases.
With the win, Colby avoids the non-conference season sweep and builds momentum heading into its final KJCCC series of the regular season. The Trojans will host Dodge City on Wednesday before traveling to Dodge City on Friday to close out the regular season, with postseason positioning on the line.
