The Colby Trojans baseball squad is home Thursday (March 26) to open a four-game conference series against the previously ranked Barton Cougars, before traveling to Great Bend on Saturday (March 28) to complete the series with a doubleheader.
Colby enters the matchup at 7-19 overall and is still searching for its first conference victory. Despite the record, the Trojans' offense has been productive throughout the season. Colby has scored 184 runs while posting a team batting average just under .300, along with 38 home runs on the year, showing consistent ability to generate offense, even if it hasn't yet translated into wins.
Offensively, the Trojans are led by freshman Callum Thomson, who paces the team with a .352 batting average. Sophomore two-way standout Turner Zdunich has also been a key contributor, hitting .338 while leading the team with seven home runs and 26 RBIs, along with an impressive .721 slugging percentage. Charlie Langford and Thomson share the team lead in doubles with five each, while seven different Trojans have already reached double figures in RBIs this season.
Barton enters the series at 22-7 (7--5 KJCCC) and is coming off a split with Garden City and a recent loss to Cowley. The Cougars boast one of the most explosive offenses in the conference, totaling 311 runs scored and 273 RBIs, ranking among the top marks in the KJCCC. Their power numbers are comparable to Colby's with 42 home runs, but Barton separates itself with 148 extra-base hits, the third-most in the conference.
The Cougars are led by Kyle Walker, who has been dominant at the plate, hitting .514 across all 29 games with 55 hits, including seven triples. Rhett Winchester provides additional firepower, batting over .400 while leading the team with nine home runs, tied for fifth-most in the conference, and a conference-best 23 stolen bases.
On the mound, Barton features one of the top arms in the league in Brian Justice. The right-hander owns a 4.22 ERA across seven starts and 32 innings pitched, allowing just nine earned runs while posting an 8.44 strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate, ranking among the conference's best.
Colby will look to capitalize on its offensive production and break through for its first conference win as it takes on one of the KJCCC's top contenders this week.
