Colby baseball enters the week with a record of 5-15 (0-8 KJCCC), currently riding a nine-game losing streak. The Trojans were swept by Butler this past weekend in a series that featured several high-scoring contests.
Colby will look to get back on track Tuesday (March 17) when they host Otero in a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Trojans will then return to conference action later in the week with a four-game series against No. 6 Cloud County, beginning with games on Thursday (March 19) in Concordia, KS. The series will conclude in Colby on Saturday (March 21).
Turner Zdunich has been the offensive catalyst for the Trojans this season. The sophomore is hitting .362 with a team-best .810 slugging percentage while launching seven home runs, which are tied for seventh most in the conference. Zdunich has also recorded 11 extra-base hits and leads the team with 25 RBIs.
Callum Thomson has also been productive at the plate, hitting .321 with a .441 on-base percentage and three home runs. Earlier this season against Hutchinson, Thomson drove in seven runs across a two-game stretch. Jacob Mraz is hitting .301 on the season with three home runs and three doubles. Thomson, Mraz, and Jake Brooks are tied for second on the team with 13 RBIs each, helping anchor the middle of the Trojan lineup.
Dallen Rude leads the bullpen with two saves this season, tied for the most in the conference. In 11 innings pitched, he holds a 7.36 ERA while serving as one of the team's primary late-inning options. Thomas Loubier has logged 12 innings on the mound with a 6.75 ERA and 11 strikeouts. Trey Schroader has made five appearances this season and carries a 7.13 ERA while striking out 15 batters, good for a 7.64 strikeouts-per-nine rate.
Colby begins the week at home Tuesday against Otero, who enters the doubleheader with a 3-13 record but riding a two-game winning streak. As a team, Otero is hitting .246 with 10 home runs. Riley Laugel leads the squad with a .313 average in 48 at-bats and has six doubles on the year. Michael Mignogna is also hitting .313 while leading the team with 13 RBIs and adding a pair of home runs.
Following the non-conference matchup, the Trojans return to KJCCC play with a four-game series against No. 6 Cloud County. The T-Birds enter the week with a 22-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play. Offensively, Cloud County has been one of the most dangerous teams in the nation, hitting .333 as a team with a .487 on-base percentage while blasting 50 home runs, both marks good for 11th nationally.
Kellen Burke leads the Thunderbirds with 33 RBIs this season, ranking third in the conference, while hitting .405 at the plate. Kaden Burke is hitting .372 and leads the team with 11 home runs, which ranks second in the conference.
Cloud County also features a deep pitching staff, with multiple pitchers already recording four or more wins this season. Cole Linton has been especially dominant, posting a 5-0 record with a 1.63 ERA while allowing just five earned runs across a team-high 27.2 innings pitched.
The Trojans will look to find momentum against Otero before taking on one of the top teams in the conference when Cloud County comes to town later in the week.
