Trojan athletes earn academic honors

Forty-four Colby Community College student-athletes and seven teams have been recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their academic performance during the pandemic-affected 2019-20 school year.

"I could not be more proud of our teams and each of these student-athletes," said CCC Athletic Director Mike Saddler. "The past school year provided unprecedented challenges, and despite all that was thrown at them, they continued to excel in the classroom. While success on their respective field is important, none of that matters if our teams aren't successful in the classroom, and these awards are the product of all that hard work."

To earn NJCAA All-Academic first-team recognition, a student-athlete must carry a 4.00 grade point average. Second-team honorees have a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99. GPAs for third-team members range from 3.60 to 3.79.

First Team

Wesley Kiptoo Banguria (men's cross country, indoor track and field); Arthur Berthelin (men's cross country, indoor track and field); Kyle Bloor (baseball); Taylor Brewer (women's basketball); Kaylee Christiansen (softball); Anthony Cortese (baseball); Gloria Di Laura (softball); Alexandre Fanchini (men's basketball); Ethan Francis (baseball); Melayna Gillins (softball); Sydnee Hoffman (softball); Nicholas Hosie (baseball); Emma Hough (volleyball); Hannah McCormack (softball); Sophia Nduwayo (softball); Lazrua' Osayande (baseball, wrestling); Macarena Ruiz (volleyball); Jesse Simpson (baseball) and Micah Too (men's cross country, men's indoor track and field).  

Seven Trojan teams earned NJCAA All-Academic status for collectively attaining at least a 3.0 GPA. The volleyball team had the nation's second-highest mark at 3.82. Others making the list are softball (3.66), men's cross country (3.34), baseball (3.27), men's basketball (3.17), women's basketball (3.11), and women's cross country (3.01).
